PhD student Rober Singh from MPIA in Heidelberg has been awarded one of this years Ernst Patzer Prizes for one of the best refereed publications by a young scientist among the astronomical institutes in Heidelberg, Germany (MPIA / ZAH). The paper is entitled "The nature of LINER galaxies" and has been published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics (Singh et al., 2013, A&A, 558, 43).

A recent news at the IAA webpage ( IAA News ) reminds us about the past Guillermo Haro workshop, focused on IFS surveys (GH2013), which shows a great impact of the CALIFA results.

B. Husemann et al have just published an article describin PyCosmic, a new code to detect cosmic rays, developed for the CALIFA pipeline and useful mostly for IFS data.

We present the Color-Magnitude diagram of 151 galaxies observed by CALIFA. For each galaxy it is shown
a true-color image created using the B, V and R-band reconstructed images extracted from the CALIFA
datacubes:

We presented preliminar results about HII regions properties in CALIFA in the Metals in 3D Workshop. (PDF of the Presentation).

Funding is available for a student with EU nationality to undertake a PhD at the University of St Andrews under the supervision of Dr. Vivienne Wild, starting September 2012.

The project will involve the combined analysis of hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy mergers and observational datasets - focusing either on detailed observations of a small number of systems provided by CALIFA, or on the statistical samples provided by the GAMA survey http://www.gama-survey.org/ or, depending on the specific interests of the student.
